Monday’s “Dancing With the Stars” Disney night meant contestants had to channel their inner animated heroes.
Basketball star Iman Shumpert Let it go and impressed in a “Frozen” dance! Matt James watched ice on the dance floor as Frozone! The Miz was wonderful, magnificent, glorious and entirely blue like the genius of Aladdin! Jojo Siwa ditched the glass slippers and waltzed like Prince Charming!
Disney’s celebration was intensified when Judge Derek Hough returned after missing last week’s show due to COVID-19 protocol, while dancers Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke returned from quarantine and performed again hit the ballroom.
But like all Disney movies, there was a conflict. In Monday’s case, it was a callback from ever-popular “DWTS” host Tom Bergeron, as a past interview with him discussing his 2020 layoff resurfaced just before showtime.
Here’s what happened on the Disney dance floor and beyond:

JoJo Siwa will perform in ‘Dancing With the Stars’ with a same-sex partner: “We are going to write history”
Tom Bergeron fought against show producers before sacking
During a podcast appearance on September 13, Bergeron said he saw his 28-season layoff come long before he and his co-host Erin Andrews were replaced by executive producer / solo host Tyra Banks.
“The end of the season (2019) which turned out to be my last season, I kind of knew that,” Bergeron said during an episode of the “Bob Saget is here for you” podcast. “So I got everything I really wanted out of my dressing room. It was pretty obvious that we were kind of head butt.”
The original “DWTS” host hinted at his 2019 public criticism of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who was cast on the reality dance contest as the key to its exit. .
“I didn’t think a politician was an appropriate booking for the show,” Bergeron said. “I don’t think the producers or the network like it.”
However, he and his former co-host Andrews, who joined in 2014, kept smiling for television audiences. “I can compartmentalize,” he explained. “Erin and I had more fun being fired than almost anyone.”

Jojo Siwa channels Prince Charming inside to dance the waltz
The 18-year-old YouTube star made “DWTS” history by choosing to perform with same-sex partner, professional dancer Jenna Johnson. After weeks of dancing in matching outfits, the duo took on a “Cinderella” twist on Monday night – Siwa danced as Prince Charming, while Johnson wore a shimmering blue Cinderella gown for the Viennese waltz on “One Day, my prince will come “.
As Siwa chirped after the dance, “I was more excited to be a prince.” The dance was magical on TV, with graceful turns in front of a pink castle. Siwa rocked Johnson after a last deep bow.
Judge Bruno Tonioli proclaimed it to be “a Viennese waltz for the 21st century” and yelled that “you are both a dream come true”.
Carrie Ann Inaba praised the dynamics of power. “You showed the world that girls can do everything guys can do, maybe even better.”
All 9 judges’ scores came out for the first time this season as the duo waltzed to the top of the standings.
Iman Shumpert delivers a fantastic foxtrot and his children in love with “Frozen”
Shumpert was quite impressive dancing elegantly – yes elegantly – for his sweeping foxtrot on “Let It Go” from “Frozen”. But his real story of “hand-delivering” his two children with his wife Teyana Taylor captivated audiences even more.
“I became Dr Shump,” said the 6-foot-5 player, dating back to 2015 when a pregnant Taylor started early labor. He was forced to give birth to their baby daughter, Iman Tayla, 5, in their bathroom. Playing the 911 emergency call on the show only tugged more on the heartstrings, with a relieved Shumpert hearing, “She’s a little girl.”
“Dr. Shump has started again” in 2020, when Shumpert played his part in delivering their second daughter, 1-year-old Rue Rose, via a home birth.
Naturally, his two daughters are both “Frozen” fanatics with Iman in the “DWTS” audience cheering on his father.
After Shumpert wowed with heartfelt grace on the dance floor alongside partner Daniella Karagach, judge (and frequent critic) Len Goodman summed it up by saying, “Obviously you’re good at delivery. And you delivered a very good foxtrot. “
Like a terrible basketball referee, Goodman still gave Shumpert a low 6 amid the praise. The other judges were right with their 8 highest scores.
The Miz rock like The Genie, Matt James is unbelievable like Frozone
Of course, there was a dance competition on Monday night. But the real question was: who won the “DWTS” Disney Night Costume Contest?
Mike “The Miz” Mizanin was a shirtless sight as he transformed into The Genie from “Aladdin” for his fiery samba to “Friend Like Me”. The all over blue body makeup was so ubiquitous that his partner Witney Carson literally couldn’t dance too close to him lest his Jasmine costume be stained blue. And as the weeks go by, the WWE star’s magical footwork progresses as well.
Olivia Jade generated heat as Nala of “The Lion King” for her samba at “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”. The judges noted his growing chemistry with partner Val Chmerkovskiy, dressed as his Simba. As host Banks said, “You two have a great bond.”
But, in terms of costume, you can’t deny the attention to detail of “Bachelor” Matt James. He was a Frozone lookalike from “The Incredibles,” even owning the superhero leotard. Pro partner Lindsay Arnold joined him on the dance floor in her finest Edna Mode outfit, and James never tripped during the tough routine even though he kept the bulky Frozone glasses on during their quickstep. The dance ended with James spectacularly throwing confetti like Frozone does with his ice weapon. (Sacred close to freezing the competition out there.)
And they all lived happily ever after … for the moment.
The villainy will continue on “Dancing With the Stars” on October 12 for a special Disney Villains Night episode (ABC, 8 EDT / PDT). Eliminations will drop tomorrow.
