The agricultural sector implements 28 projects to strengthen food security

The Ministry of Municipality has launched 23 different research projects to boost agricultural production in the country. The initiative aims to strengthen food security in the country.

The research projects cover the agricultural production and livestock sectors, the ministry said while releasing the Achievements of the Department of Agricultural Research 2021.

The Ministry of Municipality has adopted various plans to maintain Qatar’s food security and there is a comprehensive program to improve research capabilities.

“The agricultural sector of the Ministry of Municipality seeks to ensure food security in the country, achieving 8 strategic objectives within the framework of the Ministry’s strategy 2018-2022 and the State’s national development strategy. Among these objectives is the activation of applied research and extension, and the Department of Agricultural Research is considered the main administration to achieve this objective,” the ministry said in its tweet handle.

The project for the development of date production aims to develop pastures and food and it includes 6 research works, the project for increasing the sustainable productivity of vegetable crops in order to achieve food security and 7 studies of Research is ongoing, and the Small Ruminant Livestock Systems Development Project in Qatar contains 3 research studies.

For the research work, the ministry built 3 screen houses, 1 screen living room and 2 cold houses, the ministry said.

Among the additional units for sheltered agriculture, the Department of Agricultural Research has allocated 8 irrigation pullets and one rebot unit of fertilizer unit for grafting green seedlings and a 300-liter spray engine.

As part of support services for government palm groves and private farms, an initiative to dry dates, organize palm oil pollination activities (field days for farmers), distribute pollen powder and palm seedlings has been initiated.

The livestock research station housed a sheep bath, nine sheds and 200 square meters of feed,

A total of 580 herds of animals are available at the Animal Production Research Station, including sheep, goats, camels, deer, and oryx.

Overall, the Agricultural Research Department conducted 1,839 analyzes in various fields in 2021. The department organized 35 research-related activities, events, technical meetings, workshops, and conferences.
