(BRANCHBURG, NJ) – The Arts & Design Department at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) will present DanceWorks, an outdoor event of student and teacher dances, on Friday, April 30 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 at 3 p.m. A rainy date is forecast for Sunday May 2 at 3:00 p.m. Produced by Loretta Fois, Director of the RVCC Dance Program, the event will take place on the basketball courts at the College’s Branchburg campus.
The student choreography includes dances by Mikayla Ahart (Hillsborough), Mallory Banks (Fanwood), Dree Dray (South Plainfield), Evangelina Sandoval (Bayonne), Emily Stecher (Berkeley Heights), Alison Stone (Bound Brook) and Cedric Thomas (North Plainfield). Student choreography is the culmination of a semester of classroom work as students create and rehearse the new works to be performed. The faculty’s choreography includes the creation of two new pieces specially designed for the outdoor environment, created by adjunct professors Marissa Aucoin and Lauren Beirne.
The Raritan Valley Dance Ensemble (RVDE), under the direction of Loretta Fois, will perform Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Rosas danst Rosas. This piece, created in 1983, has become a benchmark in the history of postmodern dance. In a 2011 review, The New York Times described Rosas as “a complex and haunting work … fascinating and exhausting, fascinating and relentless, brilliant and tedious, it is a fascinating exploration of synchronicity, pattern and rhythm.” In 2013, Keersmaeker released some of the choreography online, inviting the world to “create their own dance remixes”. This choreography, called The fABULEUS Rosas Remix project, has been held worldwide and over 600 downloads can be viewed at rosasdanstrosas.be.
RVDE is made up of current students, alumni and members of the RVCC community and provides opportunities for the College and the wider community to experience and enjoy live dance performances. The Touring Ensemble performs in local schools and community groups every semester, as well as at events on campus.
