The Paul Taylor Dance Company’s performance at PS21, featuring a program of two classic Taylor works, marked a return to the region of live dancing for audiences seated inches apart. Rightly so, it was kind of a celebration. “Company B”, made up of songs by the Andrews Sisters and inspired by 1940s dance styles, teems with playfulness and flirtatiousness, shadowed by momentary glimpses of war and death. “Esplanade”, with music by JS Bach, weaves deceptively simple movements (running, sliding, falling, jumping) into a magnificent multi-layered construction that only a master architect could effortlessly hold aloft.
