MVRDV reveals design of barcode-inspired green housing unit in Amsterdam

MVRDV unveiled the design for “De Oosterlingen”, a series of seven sustainable residential buildings on the island of Oostenburg in Amsterdam. The proposed buildings are distributed in a ‘barcode’ composition, forming an apparent unified design but with a lively skyline and unique features such as different roof shapes and facades made of wood, glass, recycled bricks and more. bio-based composites.

The project is located at the entrance to the island, a lively residential area that was once an industrial area. Its industrial history remains visible throughout its urban fabric, with monumental quay walls, warehouses and preserved cranes. As a reminiscence of the industrial history of the region, a number of facades have been designed to open like folding shutters and canopies, creating a dynamic set of facades different from each other, but still visually harmonious.

The architecture firm has designed seven connected buildings organized around a collective space and a shared rooftop. The whole master plan improves the green ratio of the city with lush vegetation distributed over the seven buildings, identified as the greenhouse, the beekeeper, the bump, the garden, the House, the rock, and the nest box.

It will be a green complex which in my opinion is not only good for people but also for birds and insects. The buildings are tiered, with terraces leading up to the tower at one end. The roofs of the lower buildings will include gardens, an apple orchard, urban agriculture or a forest on the roof. These green implementations generate very low emissions, achieving a holistic sustainable approach. The team of architects also ensured that the design of the master plan was human-centered. Walking trails are sewn throughout the plot to facilitate gatherings and promote a sense of community. The complex has both lively and quiet areas, catering to the needs of all residents and visitors.

The development covers 13,950m² which consists of 144 housing units, with 1,000m² of space reserved for various facilities, such as catering services, a healthy food store, a small private cinema and a social impact factory. Construction is expected to start at the end of 2022.
