Candy man can • “And I had lunch on another joke for many years. After she introduces herself I’ll add ‘and I’m her man Candy’, ”said Ken.
The two met at a festival in St. Charles after Candy placed a personal ad on a local online listing. “You can’t do that anymore,” she said, “but we met, and we talked and talked. Soon the two would be a couple. “We’ve been married for 11 years and have been manufacturing since 2015,” said Candy.
They have separate offices and separate workspaces, but coming up with ideas, buying the myriad pieces that make their birdhouses unique, and bringing shows to life are all things they share.
Whistle while you work • Each nest box made by the Cundiffs is one of a kind. “Even when we make duplicates of some sort of birdhouse, like the Hogwarts sets, they’re each different,” Candy said.
“For the decorative elements on the birdhouses and on the wind chimes, we go everywhere – in Joanne’s fabric store and Michael’s, we buy online and we get a lot on Etsy – we’re always looking for things. Said Candy.
“We buy nest boxes that are already made. Ken adds the caps, tint and lacquer, then I decorate them – and Ken does sometimes too. Finally, we spray them with polyurethane, ”explains Candy.
