Through a dynamic insect-like personality called ‘Lonely Bug,’ Liam Payne captures the zeitgeist of the COVID-19 pandemic – the frustration, reflection, introspection and, in some ways, forgiveness of feelings and childish tendencies – in a non-fungible token (NFT) way.
A sensitive and confrontational character that Payne conceived at the start of the COVID health crisis, in theory Lonely Bug is “meant to be that ethereal character.” “It’s almost like a fly that’s stuck under a glass of beer and wants to escape but can’t,” Payne said. “I think we all felt that at the start of the lockdown. “
After debuting as a graphite on a sketchbook, Lonely Bug would gain momentum, thanks to the help of former Payne “Get Low” collaborator Zedd as well as Gabe Damast (“Silly Gabe”), a 3D animator, designer and VDJ and entrepreneur GaryVee.
“When Liam explained the concept of Lonely Bug to me, I could really feel it because there is something about this concept that I see in myself… the bug being trapped in this box, being able to see all the beautiful ones. things outside of the box but not being able to access it, “Zedd said.” And of course for Liam, I think it’s something extremely personal. To a certain extent, that’s his life, being the superstar that he is, being able to see all the beautiful things but not really doing them, and of course anyone can always look inside and see what they are. he does.
As COVID-19 continued to evolve, Payne, Zedd, Silly Gabe and a handful of others close to the project regularly met via Zoom to strategize and shape Lonely Bug’s plans. “After determining what we wanted the animations to look like, the musical conversation began,” said Silly Gabe.
For this part of Lonely Bug’s vision, Payne would turn to Zedd. Care in selecting the chords to use in Lonely Bug’s “four to five” tracks was paramount for the accurate and appropriate sonic translation of the emotions associated with the tracks, Zedd explained:
“My role in this world of Lonely Bug is to mark the correct emotion for each piece as they can be interpreted in different ways and that is why I have always stayed in touch with Liam and continually asked him all these questions about it. that he wanted people to feel when they see him because the tracks are a little touching and sad and if I put the wrong chords underneath it wouldn’t feel like that, so I really wanted to make sure everything that I put in is exactly what Liam envisioned because he came up with the concept, they’re supposed to feel different in their own way and I guide those emotions.
Representing a “more physical and immersive” approach to an NFT drop, from its conceptualization to its appearance and impact, the Lonely Bug collection will land on Nifty Gateway on June 15th. Learn more about making NFT transcendent and pushing back the envelopes below.
