Launch of the BRICS agricultural research platform to promote collaboration in agricultural research and innovation
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar today announced the operationalization of the BRICS agricultural research Platform prepared and implemented in India to enhance cooperation in agricultural research and innovations among BRICS member states. The Minister was addressing the 11and meeting of BRICS Ministers of Agriculture under the theme BRICS Partnership for Enhancing Agro-biodiversity for Food Security and Nutrition.
BRICS – The Agricultural Research Platform, as a global platform for scientific agriculture, will help solve the problems of hunger, undernutrition, poverty and inequality in the world by promoting agricultural development sustainable through strategic cooperation in agriculture and related sectors.
The BRICS-ARP has been operationalized to intensify cooperation in agricultural research, technology, policy, innovation and capacity building, including technologies for smallholder agriculture, and to sustainably increase yields and incomes of farmers in BRICS member countries. The platform is to intensify the exchange of research and innovation results and best practices for scaling up in the respective BRICS countries.
The BRICS Agricultural Research Platform Coordinating Center is hosted at NASC Complex, Pusa under the governance of Department of Agricultural Research and Education / ICAR, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare . The BRICS agricultural research platform domain name is http://barp.org.in. All BRICS member states approved this domain name during the working group meeting held on August 12-13, 2021. BRICS nations also appointed their focal points for BRICS-ARP to interact virtually via the platform and identifies common problems and develops common projects to find solutions. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research is India’s focal organization.
Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar and Agriculture Ministers of Federative Republic of Brazil, Russian Federation, People’s Republic of China and of the Republic of South Africa gathered virtually today for the 11and meeting of BRICS agriculture ministers.
The Union Minister, in his speech to the BRICS agriculture ministers, said that agrobiodiversity has a key role in food security and nutrition and in the development of resilient agri-food systems. He appreciated the efforts of all BRICS nations for the promotion and conservation of agro-biodiversity and food security during the period. Covid19 pandemic.
State Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Kailash Choudhary, Shri Sanjay Agarwal, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Dr.Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education and DG, ICAR, and other senior officials from the two departments joined the virtual meeting at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi.
