In one such case, a 31-year-old man, inspired by the Bollywood film Kabir Singh starring Shahid Kapoor, was arrested for posing as an orthopedic surgeon on dating sites to extort money from gullible women.
According to police, the accused Anand Kumar was arrested along with a co-conspirator Priyam Yadav, after the police received a complaint from a female doctor who was duped by Kumar.
It all started when Kumar created a fake profile on the dating app Tinder under the name of Dr Rohit Gujral, after which he started talking to the female doctor.
Kumar promised to marry the doctor and convinced her to transfer Rs. 30,000 to her bank account. He later also blackmailed her by threatening to expose her private photos and videos.
Speaking about the case, Deputy Police Commissioner (Cyber Cell) Anyesh Roy said Kumar runs an event management business and is in contact with many aspiring models and actors.
“He used the photos of one of these men to create a fake profile on various dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and dating sites like Jeevan Saathi, named after Dr Rohit Gujral, claiming to be an orthopedic surgeon,” he said. he declared.
When Kumar was questioned, he told police that the idea of identifying himself as a doctor came to him after watching the movie Kabir Singh. He then created a profile to attract women, and once he connected with the women, he would exchange numbers and start talking to them.
He would avoid video calls saying his mother was sick and within days he would convince them of his seriousness to marry them.
“Kumar had been doing this for four months and duped a lot of women. A few of them thought he was in a “difficult situation” but that they would eventually marry them. A woman even asked for a loan of Rs 5 lakhs for Kumar, ”he added.
Finally, the fraud was discovered after the police tracked him down using his ID card and arrested him in Lajpat Nagar.
