Hank Aaron, a legend in the field, found a way to be even more than that in his life – and continued to inspire and help others throughout.
ATLANTA – Hank Aaron has often said that most of his life is helping others, helping children, achieving greatness.
If we don’t say it enough – that Aaron was more than just a baseball player
A boy born like Henry. Man who died as baseball legend, philanthropist and civil rights champion
“He was just a great example of what it is to be a man”, Michael bond noted.
Hank Aaron was threatened and hated for his skin color as he tried to break Babe Ruth’s home run record. In an interview with Jet Magazine in 1968, he denounced Major League Baseball for racism within its ranks.
Aaron later became the first black American to hold a senior executive position in baseball with the Atlanta Braves.
He supported the NAACP and founded the Chasing the Dream Foundation to support disadvantaged children with mentorship and financial support.
“Countless, countless children who are now adults now, I’m sure they’re where they are now because of Hank Aaron,” Sharmen Gowens.
Aaron helped Major League Baseball invest $ 2 million to provide scholarships for children.
“There are people here who play the violin because of Hank Aaron,” Gowens said. “There are young men and women dancing because of Hank Aaron.”
Aaron has always used his platform to empower black Americans. One of his last public acts was to obtain the COVID19 vaccine – to encourage trust in communities that have long struggled to trust America’s racist history in medical research.
“It’s the character of the man that makes him an example for everyone on how to live his life,” Bond said.
In addition to all this, more than 350 Boys and Girls Club members received scholarships thanks to Aaron and his wife. The Aarons have also regularly made donations to many historically black colleges and universities in Georgia.
The President of Morehouse said Aaron’s contributions to the college have helped change countless lives.
In short, it was a boy born under the name of Henry who grew into a man who will be remembered as legend, a philanthropist and a champion named Hank Aaron.
