Through Comic, Beavan discussed his work at a press conference for Cruella. She explained that the next Disney movie wasn’t her “the biggest challenge“and explained why this honor goes to Mad Max: Fury Road.

I don’t think that was my biggest challenge. I would say Mad Max was because it was so out of my comfort zone, but it also practically opened up a whole new career for me because I did a lot of charming but, you know, period drama, particularly English Victorian style. Regency Ages, I think people were a little surprised that I could approach the post-apocalyptic world in a rather disgusting way. It was awesome. But that was probably the biggest challenge. Because like I said, I couldn’t have been more out of my comfort zone. [Cruella] was more in my comfort zone, as I remember the 70s, and the story is very clear. There are a lot of things to hang on to with Cruella. Our – our problem was the weather … I had an amazing team, an amazing team. And one way or another, we did. So bless them.

Beavan’s explanation for why Mad Max: Fury Road was hard to break, that makes a lot of sense. The film has an incredibly specific look, unlike anything seen outside of the franchise. In addition, before Road of fury, the most recent Mad Max The film was released in 1985, which makes it more difficult to use it for inspiration today. However, even though this was Beavan’s biggest career challenge, it’s clear that his work on the film was a success; she landed her second Oscar for it.

The Academy tends to reward costume designers for fashion-focused films, with Patricia Field, for example, winning a nomination for her work on The devil wears Prada.
