Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup has an accelerated release schedule and some long overdue features, but the biggest excitement will be centered on two mind-boggling design decisions. And now we can see them for the first time on Apple’s new flagship model.
In one new exclusivity, the hugely popular YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger (aka Unbox Therapy) has achieved a detailed model of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And the strengths are all significant.
IPhone 13 Pro Max Cameras – Much larger
What immediately catches your attention is the size of the new rear cameras. While the pictures speak for themselves, Hilsenteger measured the diameter of the modules with calipers and compared them to the iPhone 12 Pro Max:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 16.99 mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 14.10 mm
This is a 20% increase in the size of each camera module, the biggest physical leap in iPhone history. Larger modules mean taller lenses and larger lenses let in more light, which increases image quality, especially in low or poor lighting conditions. Plus, every iPhone 13 model is expected to benefit from these bigger goals. Notably, a recent iPhone 13 Mini design leak showed that the phone will still only have two rear cameras, but they are the same size oversized.
Detailed specs have yet to be disclosed for each camera in the iPhone 13, but the ultra-wide is expected to receive the biggest jump in quality. It is recommended to switch from a five piece f2.4 fixed focus lens to an f1.8 six piece autofocus. Considering that the ultra-wide has been the worst performing iPhone camera for several generations, this is a very welcome upgrade and bodes well for equally big leaps from other mods.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Notch – Much smaller
The other big change for the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a much smaller notch and Hilsenteger again measured it against its predecessor:
- IPhone 13 Pro Max notch – 34.62 mm
- IPhone 12 Pro Max notch – 26.31 mm
That’s a 30% size reduction, and while it’s not the notch-less endgame everyone wants, it’s a massive reduction for a device that has all the components of the technology in it. Apple’s state-of-the-art Face ID facial recognition.
Apple achieved this by moving the earpiece / speakerphone into the top frame of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and positioning the Face ID modules directly below. This arrangement saves no depth but removes the entire length of the speaker from the notch.
Dimensions of iPhone 13 Pro Max
What hasn’t changed much, however, are the overall dimensions of Apple’s next-gen iPhone:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 160.85 x 78.08 x 7.52 mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 160.80 x 78.10 x 7.47 mm
These measurements are all within a margin of error and, surprisingly enough, it was a similar story with the thickness of the iPhone 13 Pro Max including its rear cameras (10.36mm) compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max (10.28mm). The button layouts were also identical while the light port remains, despite rumors of a portless model coming this year.
Needless to say, there are still a lot of loopholes here. Hilsenteger’s iPhone 13 Pro Max cannot answer questions about upcoming hot-tip 120Hz ProMotion displays in Pro editions, the potential return of Touch ID, or anything about the leaked internal changes including modems. Next-generation 5G, improved WiFi speeds and range, MagSafe 2.0 and greater power efficiency.
On the flip side, with iPhone 13 production way ahead of schedule and it looks like you might just have to wait 2-3 months before Tim Cook confirms them on stage.
