BOZEMAN, MT – The Craft Maltsters Guild will be hosting its first Malt for Brewers Workshop in partnership with Montana State University (MSU) – Barley, Malt & Brewing Quality Lab from August 9-10, 2021. This two-day in-person course is personalized. designed for craft brewers and will provide a comprehensive overview of technical malt knowledge from farm to fermenter.
The workshop will take place in the Plant Bioscience Building on the MSU campus and in some surrounding locations. Over the course of the two days, barley topics from the field to the quart will be covered, including:
- Barley breeding and the North American supply chain
- Aspects of barley and malt quality measurement
- A review of the malting process and technology
- Malt styles, flavor and troubleshooting
Hands-on laboratory activities and tours of the MSU malt quality laboratory and breeding plots, as well as a local malt house, will be part of the experience. Workshop registration is $ 600 for members of the Craft Maltsters Guild and $ 750 for non-members. Attendance is limited to 15 students. A copy of the CMG Quality and Safety Manual and Malt Flavor Sensory Maps are also included with the registration.
“We are keeping the class size small to encourage social distancing and optimize the learning experience,” says Jesse Bussard, CEO of CMG. “Although it is not mandatory, we also strongly encourage all participants to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before attending the course.”
Hannah Turner, director of the MSU lab and current CMG board member, will serve as the course instructor. Turner has been involved in plant science research for over a decade and has served as Director of the MSU Barley, Malt, & Brewing Quality Lab since 2016. In addition, she heads the CMG Technical Committee and the Malt Subcommittee. from the American Society of Brewing Chemist.

The Malt for Brewers Workshop is an ideal option for any brewer wishing to deepen their understanding of their malt or for any maltster wishing to communicate better with their brewers.
Malt for Brewers Workshop follows growing interest from craft brewers and adoption of Craft Malt Certified™ Seal. Launched in the fall of 2019, the program now has more than 145 partner breweries and distilleries.
“The curiosity of craft brewers for craft malt is growing and with that, so is the Craft Malt Certified Seal label,” says Bussard. “Brewers are now a growing and important demographic among our members. As such, we are committed to developing useful programs and educational offerings that will promote their success and knowledge of malt and its use in brewing.
The Malt for Brewers Workshop will be the organization’s first foray into brewer-focused malt education, but certainly not the last. Courses for distillers and a malt sensory workshop are also under development.
